AnnualCatalanMeeting

We attend the second Annual Catalan Meeting on Computer Vision

The second Annual Catalan Meeting on Computer Vision (ACMCV) was held on the 18th of September in Universitat Pompeu Fabra of Barcelona. ACMCV was created with the aim of strengthen the network between computer vision researchers in Catalunya. As it is well known, Catalunya has a large community working in the computer vision field, both in the industry and the academia. Thus, this meeting is intended to get to know the people working in the field as well as their recent developments.   The event contained several activities, including a poster session, where the four members of Vicorob (Nuno Gracias,…

Former ViBOT student Chee Sing Lee defends his PhD Thesis

This thesis focuses on the problem of SLAM, in particular feature-based SLAM, where a mobile autonomous vehicle explores an unknown environment, navigating by observing landmarks. As the environment is previously unexplored, SLAM algorithms must estimate the location of the landmarks in addition to the location of the vehicle. The majority of research in feature-based SLAM builds on the legacy of foundational work using the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), a single-object estimation technique. Because feature-based SLAM is an inherently multi-object problem, this has led to a number of suboptimalities in popular solutions. We hypothesize that a feature based SLAM algorithm derived…

ViBOT Day 2015 in Girona

The ViBOT day is an event that the Erasmus Mundus Master VIBOT organizes every year at the Scientific and Technological park at the University of Girona. In this occasion, it took place last 16th of June 2015 with the main goal of establishing a link between companies and graduate students.   Along the ViBOT day the students have the chance to present their work in front of a wide audience in which there are other students but also professors and companies. On the other hand, interested companies, present their job profiles as well as their activity to try attracting talent….

Collaboration between UdG and Surrey University

Oliver Diaz, postdoctoral researcher at ViCOROB, has been appointed as Visiting Academic Researcher in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Science (University of Surrey, UK). For an initial period of 1 year, Dr Diaz will collaborate closely with the Surrey’s Biomedical Imaging group, lead by Dr Kevin Wells. This position will boost the collaboration between both parts and will allow further investigation of common research lines started in the past.   The Biomedical Imaging group is a multidisciplinary research group based at the Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (http://www.surrey.ac.uk/cvssp/). It focuses on medical imaging technologies (X-ray mammography, MRI,…

Underwater Vision and Robotics team organize IFAC NGCUV 2015 in Girona

From 28-30th of April 2015, Girona Underwater Vision and Robotics team moved to Hotel Carlemany to organize IFAC NGCUV 2015 conference. The event took place in the nice city of Girona and counted on more than 90 attendees from 22 different countries.   NGCUV goal is to show the latest investigations in Unmanned Underwater Vehicles as well as to promote the exchange of information and perspectives on the field’s current research. The Workshop brings together a diverse set of researchers who are jointly committed to foster the research and innovation in underwater robotics. The event series was initiated in 2003…

Automated Analysis of Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Breast

Albert Gubern defends his PhD thesis “Automated Analysis of Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Breast”

Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DCE-MRI) of the breast is employed for breast cancer screening in women with cumulative lifetime breast cancer risk of more than 20-25% (US and EU guideline). Other indications include, but are not limited to, preoperative staging, evaluation of women treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy and problem solving in case of inconclusive findings from other modalities. Compared to mammography, which is the image modality commonly used in regular screening, breast DCE-MRI presents higher sensitivity, especially in women with dense breasts. However, the analysis of breast MRI requires interpretation of four-dimensional DCE data, as well as correlation to…
