Automated brain tissue segmentation of magnetic resonance images in multiple sclerosis

Doctoral thesis “Automated brain tissue segmentation of magnetic resonance images in multiple sclerosis”   By Sergi Valverde Supervised by Dr. Arnau Oliver, Dr. Xavier Lladó   Abstract Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is the most common chronic immune-mediated disabling neurological disease affecting the central nervous system, in which the insulating covers of the nerve cells in the spinal chord and brain are damaged. MS is characterized by the presence of lesions in the brain, predominantly in the white matter (WM) tissue of the brain. Due to the sensitivity of structural Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) disseminating WM lesions in time and space, it…

An approach to melanoma classification exploiting polarization information

Doctoral thesis “An approach to melanoma classification exploiting polarization information”   By Rastgoo, Mojdeh Supervised by García Campos, Rafael; Marzani, Frank; Morel, Olivier   Abstract Malignant melanoma is the deadliest of skin cancers and causes the majority of deaths in comparison to other skin-related malignancies. Yet it is the most treatable type of cancer, thanks to its early diagnosis. Subsequently, early diagnosis is crucial for patient survival rate and numerous Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems have been proposed by the research community to assist dermatologists in early diagnosis. These systems are based on the most common skin imaging modality, cross-polarized dermoscopy….

Kick-off meeting of the SMARTER project

Breast cancer screening based on mammography (MG) has had a major impact on reducing mortality at affordable cost. However, overdiagnosis, overtreatment, and the lack of sensitivity of mammography, especially in women with dense breasts, need to be addressed to improve screening. More effective screening cannot be achieved with the generalised use of MG for all the population; personalisation is required where the density of a womans breasts or increased cancer risk is assessed prior to determining whether or not additional imaging (i.e. magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), 3D ultrasound (ABUS), or tomosynthesis (DBT)) is necessary. Hence, the question is no longer…

We attended to the world’s premier event for marine science and ocean technology

Oceanology International is the world leading marine science and ocean technology exhibition. Every two years, Oceanology International brings together the latest technologies and worldwide leaders from a variety of industries including oil & gas, engineering, marine science and maritime security.   Girona Underwater Vision and Robotics team was present in the exhibition to showcase the two AUV prototypes developed by the research group (Girona 500 and Sparus II AUV) as well as the different image and sonar data processing capabilities.   The stand of the group received many interested visitors throughout the exhibition days thus enhancing the visibility of the…

We presented the results of our work as part of the ASSURE project #ECR2016

The 28th annual European Congress of Radiology (ECR) took place last week at the Austria Center Vienna. From March 2nd to March 5th, more than 25,000 (onsite and online) participants had the opportunity to learn the latest trends and research on radiology from first hand. ECR also counted with the presence of around 300 worldwide companies of the medical field, professional societies as well as research projects.     In this sense, the FP7 European project ASSURE, where ViCOROB took part as consortium member with the lead of Dr Robert Martí, was present at the congress with its own booth….
