STRONGMAR winter school takes place in Girona

Last week, from 17 to 21st of October, took place in Girona the STRONGMAR winter school on “Underwater Vision and Robotics”. In the framework of this twinning action, EC funded, that aims to enhance the scientific and technological capacity of INESC TEC and linked institutions in research, such training activities are a key for success.   Our team shared its knowledge on the topics of underwater vision and path planning. Further training is planned in the future, both in Porto and in Girona again.   Around 20 students attended the event together with engineers, professors and postdoctoral fellows.   More…

EXCELLABUST project meeting at Breaking the Surface 2016 in Croatia

Laboratory for Underwater Systems and Technologies (LABUST) at the University of Zagreb Faculty of Electrical and Engineering (UNIZG-FER) in Croatia positioned itself in the last years as the regional leader in marine robotics: LABUST has the required technologies, people, infrastructure, and experience in field experiments.   What LABUST is missing is research excellence that will allow it to fully exploit and bring available resources to a level compatible with internationally leading institutions in the area of marine robotics.   The main goal of EXCELLABUST project is to address networking gaps and deficiencies between UNIZG-FER and internationally leading counterparts at EU…

MORPH FP7 TRIALS IN SANT FELIU DE GUÍXOLS (GIRONA)

From Wednesday 9th to Friday 18th of July, several MORPH European project experiments were held in Girona. Their goal was to prepare for the upcoming trials in the Azores islands next September. The Variable Geometry Range Only Navigation (VG-ROF) algorithm was tested with the IST Medusas, the UdG SparusII and Girona500, and the ATLAS SEACAT. The first three days were devoted to software integration, at CIRS facilities, to have everything ready for the trials carried out in Sant Feliu’s harbor. During the second week multiple missions with different vehicle configurations were tested. The main purpose was to grab images and…

TRITON National Funded Project experiments in Girona

From Monday 12th to Friday 16th of May, the TRITON national project experiments where held in Girona. The goal of these experiments was to localize an underwater panel with an acoustic ranging sensor. Once the panel is localized, the AUV homes to it and, once closer, using a vision-based system docks in it and performs an autonomous intervention. This intervention is split in two parts, first the vehicle manipulates a valve (open/close) and then connects and disconnects a hot stab. The first day was dedicated to system integration between the Girona500, the arm brought by the UJI team and the…

MORPH FP7 Project field trials in Toulon conclude successfully

Five days of trials are nearing the end, and Ifremer is proud to have hosted this achievement. All six vehicles brought by the project partners have worked flawlessly; the teams have accomplished a huge amount of work to integrate these vehicles into one single Morph system. All objectives at this stage of the project have been achieved, and a milestone has been set in underwater robotics, running a heterogeneous fleet of autonomous vehicles – from 35 to 300kg – in a formation based solely on acoustic network communication and range detection. Thursday evening all team members have then shown their…
