{"id":11468,"date":"2024-09-18T10:59:52","date_gmt":"2024-09-18T08:59:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vicorob.udg.edu\/?p=11468"},"modified":"2024-09-18T11:05:19","modified_gmt":"2024-09-18T09:05:19","slug":"vicorobs-learnable-3d-pooling-advances-brain-image-classification","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vicorob.udg.edu\/ca\/vicorobs-learnable-3d-pooling-advances-brain-image-classification\/","title":{"rendered":"VICOROB&#8217;s Learnable 3D Pooling Advances Brain Image Classification"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, September 10-11, a researcher from the medical imaging research group of VICOROB attended the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aihealthconference.com\/\">3rd annual AI in Health Conference<\/a> in Houston, home of the largest medical center in the world &#8211; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tmc.edu\/\">Texas Medical Center,<\/a> hosted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/kenkennedy.rice.edu\/\">Ken Kennedy Institute<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rice.edu\/\">Rice University<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A collaborative work between our team from the medical imaging research group and <a href=\"https:\/\/sbmi.uth.edu\/\">McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics at UTHealth Houston<\/a> was presented at the conference and accepted as both an <strong>oral presentation and a poster<\/strong>. The recording of the talk has been posted to the Ken Kennedy Institute <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=u0oPFXkYKXk\">YouTube channel<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The presented work proposes <strong>learnable 3D pooling<\/strong> (L3P), a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based module that encodes <strong>3D data into multiple 2D feature maps<\/strong> in a learnable way. The L3P module is followed by a 2D lightweight CNN, to perform <strong>3D brain image classification<\/strong> in an end-to-end manner, achieving results equivalent to full 3D models, but with fewer parameters and lower computational cost.
