During his stay, together with Professor Dr. Tomislav Pribanič and Dr. Tomislav Petkovic, was working side by side on 3D surface registration algorithms (point cloud alignment) and also on calibrating a structured light projection system for underwater 3D vision. As a result of this collaboration, two articles will be published in an international conference (3DV2022) and in a prestigious journal (IEEE Sensors). In addition, at the end of July we will receive the visit from one of the PhD students of Dr. Petkovic, who will be at CIRS for a week to continue the collaboration between the two universities.

“We have left the collaboration open because we work in very similar fields and there is a mutual interest in continuing”, underlines Josep Forest.

The Laser 3D scanner technology developed and patented by the University of Girona is one step beyond the state of the art of underwater 3D perception. It is the result of a PhD thesis in Underwater Robotics and 3D Perception done by Albert Palomer and tutored by Pere Ridao, Josep Forest and David Ribas that will be soon defended.

L3S, as an easy to integrate system, will allow the end user to gather online 3D information of a target scene from a moving vehicle at a resolution where the objects can clearly be identified. Moreover, it will also allow the user to have a more accurate idea of the inspected area at a very high resolution,at the cost of a longer scanning time, being able to detect cracks from 1mm, find targets, support on the assisted operation of autonomous intervention tasks, quantify volumes,… covering real market needs.

This technology is currently on a valorization process and one of the first steps towards the market was the participation of the L3S team in a Robott-Net voucher and a license agreement with the company IQUA robotics. The technology was presented in the Oceanology International as part of the IQUA portfolio for the year to come.

In March and April, I had the opportunity to attend two different international conferences to present my work about 3D registration. The first one was the International Conference on Computer Vision Theory and Applications (VISAPP) in Berlin. It was my first time in a conference and the experience was overwhelming. We were arround 300 participants exchanging our work in progress. It was a little bit difficult to manage the schedule because there were five different lines of presentations, and many interesting papers to see. Maybe my inexperience in conferences was the reason.

The second conference was the IAPR International Conference on Machine Vision Applications (IAPR-MVA) located in Tokyo, a little further. In this case, it was a very different experience. Besides the long flight, we had the opportunity to discover a very interesting culture. Tokyo is an impresive city, where the crowds move along the streets as a sea of people, everywhere, all the time. Another interesting thing about Tokyo is that it is a multi-level city: you can walk through underground paths, or at the street level, or through elevated roads, by walking, with car, metro, monorail, train…

This conference was located at Miraikan (National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation), which was full of exhibitions about new techinologies. I met a lot of people, and had the opportunity to show my work and exchange opinions about our common topics of research.

—

N’estic molt content.

This year 19th BMVA Computer Vision Summer School 2014 was held in Swansea, UK from 30th June till 4th July 2014. The delegates attending the summer school were from universities all across Europe. All the delegates were PhD students in their first or second year. VICOROB research group was represented by Ferran and I Habib, from 3D perception Lab.

Swansea University, located along the coast of Swansea bay, was the host. The event was aptly managed by them. We were exposed to the state of art in Computer Vision by talks delivered by some of the leading researchers working in labs across UK, i.e. UCL, Imperial College, Microsoft, Image Metrics etc. The topics covered ranged from Image formation, Low level vision, Feature extraction, Tracking, Segmentation to Medical Imaging, Machine Learning, Cognitive Vision and Performance evaluation. Besides lectures, two intriguing lab sessions were also held on ‘Efficient Programming’ and ‘Decision Forests’. Every afternoon, after lecture sessions, all the participants went for dinner in restaurants in Swansea, while having a walking tour of the city as well. It was a work and fun packed week, definitely recommended for future PhD students.

The attendance of ViCOROB members to the summer school was financed by ANDREA project (reference: CTM2011-29691-C02-02) of the Spanish Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad.

ViCOROB and ALSTOM transporte keep on working together on a new project related to the 3D inspection of trains, using laser technologies.

The main goal of the project is to be able to get tridimensional information of the high-speed trains in order to be able to inspect in real time the trains. It is necessary that the System is flexible enough as to be able to tune it in the future for further uses.
The System should be modular and scalable to introduce, if necessary, new cameras and lasers according to the costumer requirements. The actual configuration includes 22 Photonfocus cameras and 24 lasers as well as 2 or 3 computers for the management of the infrastructure; the used software is based on AQSENSE SL technologies, transferred to the company from ViCOROB on 2004.

As a result of this new project, the team has created 3 new work places (1 for a Postdoc and 2 for Technical Engineers) and, soon, a new granted Student will start working on them.
