Overall, the meeting goals were achieved: final children projects has been finished and can be seen at the InventEUrs scratch studio (https://scratch.mit.edu/studios/4443203/ ), the results of the first year of the project were evaluated, a draft of the project platform was presented and some partners were filmed to be included in the MOOC.

Moreover, the consortium had the chance of visiting two schools from Sansepolcro, the IIS G.Giovagnoli, which is the project partner, and ITC Luca Pacioli, which will participate in the second project wave.

Next project meeting will be held in London on the 11 and 12th of July, by then, both the platform and the MOOC will be finished and shared to the community.

My London experience was very special. This city is very huge and there are a lot of people. As a center of European capitalism London is the main destination of many people coming from around the world looking for an opportunity. The results are impossible rents, very expensive public transport, many companies, rich people and also people without resources. The upside is that universities have more money (and free coffee!!!) and this fact influences the research quality.
It was a very great experience and I learnt a lot!. The only thing that I will not miss is the weather!

Aquests tres últims mesos han sigut diferents. El passat 23 de setembre vaig agafar l’avió cap a Londres per passar l’últim trimestre de l’any treballant a la UCL (University College of London). Situada al mig de la capital anglesa, la UCL és una de les principals universitats europees (compta amb més de 30000 estudiants i prop de 6000 investigadors). Sota la supervisió del professor Niloy Mitra vaig començar un projecte molt interessant que consistia a aplicar mètodes de registre 3D per tal de fer reconstrucció de l’entorn. Aquest projecte està pensat per ser aplicat en robots de rescat terrestres amb la idea d’aconseguir una reconstrucció 3D de l’entorn del robot sense ajuda de cap sensor ni de cap informació extra.

L’experiència de viure a Londres és especial. La ciutat és molt gran i hi ha molta (molta) gent. S’hi mouen molts diners i això fa que tothom hi vingui a buscar la seva oportunitat. El resultat són lloguers impossibles, transport caríssim, moltes empreses, gent molt rica i gent amb molt pocs recursos. Londres és bàsicament la central del capitalisme europeu. La part bona d’això és que les universitats tenen bastants més recursos (tenen cafè gratis!!!) i això influeix en la qualitat de la recerca.

Ha sigut una experiència molt bona i he après molt. L’únic que no trobaré a faltar serà el temps!

The brain medical image team in VICOROB has attended it with a great participation, presenting four posters with the results of the latest research in the field. Eloy Roura presented his work on the detection and segmentation of Multiple Sclerosis lesion using only two magnetic resonance imaging modalities. Related to that, Sergi Valverde showed the results of a recent study about the effect of manual or automated lesion annotations on the computation of white matter and gray matter tissue employing different existing techniques. Finally, Mariano Cabezas was presenting both an automated approach to detect new lesions from serial brain images, and also a recent study about the effect of employing subtraction imaging for the detection of new lesions using both semiautomatic and fully automatic approaches.

The conference is also a great place to meet new companies focused on imaging, who basically perform statistical summaries required by the clinicians when diagnosing and monitoring disease progression. These companies analyse MRI directly achieved from the scanner and gather a set of biomarkers in order to describe the disease. These processes are actually the work which is carried out in the lab, and the fact that this is such interesting issue is a clear inspiration to keep working hard on developing useful tools improving the current state of the art.

Durant aquests vint anys, la trajectòria del grup ha evolucionat exponencialment i s’ha dotat d’un prestigi dins i fora de la UdG. El 2012 van ingressar 1,2 milions d’euros, que va representar un 6,91% del total de la UdG en la valoració de l’activitat de recerca de PDI per a la distribució del pressupost 2013 per productivitat a Departaments o Instituts de recerca.

Les línies de recerca en què el grup treballa actualment són l’anàlisi de la imatge, robòtica submarina, visió submarina i percepció 3D. A més, al llarg de la seva trajectòria, ViCOROB ha creat 3 spin off i ha donat suport a la creació d’empreses derivades del coneixement adquirit pels membres del grup durant el seu treball.

A nivell de docència, ViCOROB és el propulsor local del màster Erasmus Mundus ViBOT que cada any atrau estudiants a nivell internacional a la UdG i que, a més, promou activitats de generació de coneixement a les empreses del territori a través del ViBOT day, esdeveniment que té lloc a Girona.

Una altra de les accions que el grup duu a terme és la realització d’activitats divulgatives, com per exemple la participació activa en la iniciativa UdiGital.edu, la competició FIRST LEGO League i els tallers de Robòtica Submarina Educativa (R2B2).
