SEGMENTACIÓN AUTOMÁTICA DE LESIONES DE ESCLEROSIS MÚLTIPLE EN IMÁGENES DE RESONANCIA MAGNÉTICA

Project reference: PI09/91018
TOTAL BUDGET: 100.000 €
DURATION: 30/06/2009 – 30/06/2011
UdG PROJECT COORDINATOR: Dr. Xavier Lladó

Nowadays, it is well known the important role of MRI images for the supervision, evaluation and control of the Multiple Sclerosis (MS), as well as for evaluating the effect of a new therapeutic drug. Unfortunately, the typical medical inspection of a patient requires a “manual” analysis of the MRI images which implies a high time consumption. Furthermore, the inter and intra observer variability could complicate the analysis of the results from studies with several patients.

In the SALEM project we propose to develop and validate an automatic system for the detection, segmentation and description of MS lesions based on computer vision techniques. In particular, we aim to develop a computer aided tool in order to automatically detect and segment the MS lesions of the MRI images, and to provide a quantitative description and a qualitative description for each patient.

On the other hand, the AVALEM project aims to automatically evaluate and quantify the atrophy of the patients and their evolution in time.

The developed tools will be tested and evaluated exhaustively in the Hospital centers involved in the project, which are reference centers in Catalonia within the Multiple Sclerosis research field ( Hospital Dr. Josep Trueta, Clinica Girona and Hospital Vall d’Hebron ).
